ROLE
Art Lead and Game Designer
Braai Guy is the first game that Pineapple on Pizza Studios (POP Studios for short) released. It's a small (>25MB) mobile game on Ayoba. After placing 2nd in the 2023 Ayoba Hackathon we were asked to further develop it and host it on Ayoba.
As the art lead, it is my responsibility to monitor and optimize the assets to meet the build limit of under 25MB

It’s a kiff day Joburg boet. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and everyone is preparing a nice braai and jol for the Lions vs Sharks rugby… But suddenly, the wors gets woes! The chicken get chirpy! The beef isn’t between the Lions and the Sharks supporters anymore, but between your chommie and his chops! The braais attack and the Webers are on the warpath! Who can save us and our braai before the first touch!?
Only one can…

Braai Guy is a WebGL build which makes it very convenient for rapid iteration, deployment, and testing. I would recommend playing it on mobile as it is not scaled for a 16:9 or PC/portrait screen.
ART ASSETS & DIRECTION
The look I came up with for Braai Guy was influenced by the mobile-friendly features in Unity. We went for a simple, flat shading style, which made it easy to recognize characters and objects. This choice was a no-brainer, as we were working with limited resources, and we had to be mindful of the project's size constraints.
As for making Braai Guy orange, that was a somewhat random decision on my part. I figured his top would be khaki, and his shorts would be blue, so orange seemed like a unique choice. Not to mention, you don't often see braais in that color, which helped him stand out.

Updated Braai Guy art, keep an eye out for his new look.
Braai guy has gone through many design iterations and there are more coming, pictures here is a proposed redesign as well as a new cosmetics nicknamed, "Tightey Whities"
It's not just BG that has gone through changes, the environment and enemies have also
been put under the knife a few times and come out with more than a facelift.
On the left is the enemy Webber created for the game jam, on the right is the updated,
more spider-like Webber. The current model has a better feel of weight and a more "evil"
personality whereas the old version might even be called cute by some.
